Why it’s a good move

  • Maruti Suzuki has been working hard to ensure the company stays ahead in the mid-size segment. Launching the Swift S CNG will help keep the company one step forward. Also, it could force other car makers to follow suit.
  • The S-CNG fuel is 92%-98% compressed natural gas stored in containers until it is used up (about 27,000 miles). It can be refilled using a fully automated bottle which is liquidated at around Rs 120 per refill and transported by a compressed gas network to any S-CNG station of a vehicle owner for a fee of Rs 5 per fill-up. That’s quite an expense but worth it considering the environmental concerns and cost benefits.
  • The range of the Swift S-CNG is a spectacular 603 km (in city, highway and combined cycle). With the newly added sixth gear, the Swift S-CNG can travel at speeds of 145 mph.
  • The fuel efficiency rating of Swift S-CNG is 9.8 km/l in combined cycle and 9.3 km/l on petrol using CNG, while in city driving, it is 9.4 km/l on CNG and 9.2km/l for gasoline on city roads, claiming a fuel efficiency of 75% for both versions of the car.
  • The Swift S-CNG is powered by a 1.25-litre, 4-cylinder spark ignition engine and comes with a 6th gear that can be transferred to CNG mode. The machine comes with an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), which will help in case of sudden braking or deceleration. The ISG helps the car save 17% more fuel which would be used in the case of the conventional system (including inertia flywheel, coupling and brake band).
  • Considering what happened when Tata launched the Nano, this is a brilliant idea to curb pollution levels in India. We must wait and watch how things pan out for Maruti Suzuki on this score.
  • It also has stop & start technology that switches off the engine at a standstill and restarts it when you depress the gas pedal.
